CALAVERAS

1976-2000

The skeletons of Emilia Ortiz announce her entrance into one of the most popular cultural watersheds of the Mexican people. These bare bones and skulls incite laughter, celebration, and mockery, and hence the vitality it offers the painter.  It is a powerful form of directly connecting with the people via little more than the satirical content itself. In this way, the artist can make fun of those in higher positions of power, and of life and death itself.

Abstract fromEmilia Ortiz, Pintora del siglo XX. Lourdes Pacheco Ladrón de Guevara, Miguel González Lomelí and Juan Ávila Lamas. Gobierno del Estado de Nayarit/ CONACULTA.2011
